Studying in the country of basketball
Lithuania is a country at the southernmost of Europe’s Baltic states. Its capital, Vilnius is known for its medieval Old Town, subsequent Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. When you study in Lithuania you will live in a unique country which tries to catch up with the 21st century. Lithuanian people are calm, friendly and open-minded with foreigners, so it is easy to get to know them.
Lithuania is famous for its literature written in Latin, which was the language of the middle ages there. Lithuanian literary works in the Lithuanian language were first published in the 16th century. They were primarily religious.
Moreover, despite of Lithuania’s small size, it is known for its sport success, especially in basketball. If Latvia is “the country that sings”, Lithuania is definitely “the country that plays basketball”. The Lithuanian national basketball team has become worldwide known after winning the EuroBasket championship on three times in 1937, 1939 and 2003, as well a total of 7 other medals in the Eurobasket, the World Championships and the Olympic Games.
Higher education in Lithuania is of high quality, modern with innovative way of studying. Lithuanian diplomas are recognized EU-wide. Higher education in Lithuania is available at Colleges and Universities. Education institutions follow the guidelines of the Bologna declaration.
A Bachelor’s degree is 180 ECTS credits (3 years). Bachelor studies give the core of the studies and also BA gives access to future master’s studies.
A Masters degree with 60 or 120 ECTS credits (1 or 2 year). Master’s studies provides specialized content to practice research projects leading to Doctorate degrees.
PhD’s are only provide d by Universities.
If student want to study in the first-cycle progamme (Bachelor’s) at the particular higher education in Lithuanian student need to have Secondary Diploma or equal qualification.
To be admitted to the secondary-cycle university programme student should hold a Bachelor’s degree or an equal qualification.
In order to enter the third-cycle university studies. Student should have Master’s or corresponding degree. All universities have equal opportunity policies.
Vilnius University is the oldest in the Baltic states. There are people who graduated from Vilnius University and went on to win the Nobel Prize. The quality of the programmes as well as the educational and scientific activities of higher education institutions are periodically assessed by the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education. The national credit system is based on an average of 1,600 working hours per academic year, one credit corresponding to 40 hours or one week of work.
If you choose to study in Lithuanian language you have to pass a Lithuanian skill test. The test evaluate applicant’s ability to study in Lithuanian language. The test includes reading, writing and speaking skills, and also the capability to use Lithuanian along the test.
If you choose to study in English or another language you will either need certificate proving your language level, or pass the language skill test provided by the higher educational institution. High educational institutions have their own demands on the score needed.
How to apply
There are two ways to submit your application, depending on your citizenship.
If you are citizen of Lithuanian, EU/EEA country, or you have a right of permanent resident in the Republic Of Lithuania or a child, grandchild and great-grandchild of Diaspora and people of Lithuanian origin and you would like to compete for a state-funded study places, then you need to complete an application form of general admission via the website of Association of Lithuanian Higher Education Institutions LAMA BPO. The time to do is between 1st June and 23rd July.
If you are a citizen of NON-EU and NON-EEA country and you want to finance your studies independently with your own money, you should apply directly to the selected Lithuanian college or university. Note that admission to studies is carried out in July.
Foreign citizens who are planning to study in Lithuania are noted to start application procedure as early as possible. Because the time institutions to go through the paperwork can be quite long.

Your admission will be confirmed on the signing of the contract for studying with the higher education institution. And also you will be issued with the Lithuanian student card.
Tuition fees differ from institution to institution. It depends on the level of studies and study programme. Educational institution announce their tuition fees annually.
On average the cost of studies at higher educational studies are from 1 000 EUR –
5 300 EUR per year in Bachelor studies.
Average in Master’s studies they are between 2 200 to 6 500 EUR per year. And postgraduate studies 7 100 EUR to 8 500 EUR per year.
This fee structure applies to you if you are a Lithuanian or EU citizen.

Students at higher institutions in Lithuania can be awarded a state scholarship and can also participate in international exchange programmes eg. Erasmus. Students who participate in these student’s exchange programmes doesn’t have to pay extra for their exchange programme. There are two kinds of scholarships, one is for academically well performing students, and the other type is provided to welfare recipient students.

Citizens of other countries need to apply for a Schengen visa or National visa at Diplomatic Missions or Lithuanian Consulates. You can also have a temporary residence permit there too. There will be a charge for the issue of visa.

A Schengen visa for visits of less than 90 days in 180 days period
A National visa (D) for visits of between three months and a year.
If you are a citizen of country which needs a visa you must apply for the National visa (D) and also temporary residence permit. You can also apply for the temporary residence permit at Lithuanian embassy with the National visa (D), or you can do this when you arrive to Lithuania.
All the universities offers hall of residence. Some of them are situated near the universities, others are in the city center. Some are further away, then you will have to use a public transportation to get to university. These halls are all renovated and equipped with modern appliances. They all have internet access.
You should know that all the residences doesn’t have the same conditions. Usually residents share the same showers and kitchen. Also it is in common to share their room with one another, or more. But these conditions are offset by comparatively low cost of living.
